Tour Description
This Scuba Diving package includes 5 dives and accommodation for 3 nights at Sodwana Bay Lodge. This is a self drive tour and no public transport to Sodwana Bay is available.
Sodwana Bay is considered to be the premier dive site in South Africa and is the only tropical dive site in the country. Sodwana is one of the few places world-wide where dive sites are reached by weaving a path through breaking waves. This thrilling experience adds to the excitement of the dive.
The average yearly visibility is 12m. It can get as good as 40m . The reason for this is that there are no rivers running into the sea in this area. The rivers pollute the sea sometimes suspending all diving in other areas, especially after heavy, prolonged rain.
The diving is all year round. In summer the water temperature can reach 29° C. The lowest it gets is 20° C.
Sodwana Bay Lodge Scuba Centre run daily dive charters to all the reefs in Sodwana. Not only the main two-mile reef but also to the outer reefs where the splendours of five, seven and nine mile reef await you.
The skippers are all highly experienced and will take you safely through the surf to the waiting reefs are all semi inflatable Gemini crusaders powered by two Yamaha 85 marine outboard motors. The Lodge has two 6 metre and one 7 metre boat which take 10 divers plus a Divemaster or Instructor (and of course the skipper). They are serviced on a regular basis and are all in excellent condition.
Emergency equipment is on hand and boats have contact with beach control.
The Lodge
Relax at Sodwana Bay Lodge in the comfort of one of our 21 twin-bed, reed and thatch chalets. All chalets have en-suite shower and toilet, ceiling fan and mosquito nets; are serviced daily, and include complimentary tea and coffee making facilities.
The chalets are situated right in the heart of the Lodge’s diving and fishing centres and are adjacent to the volleyball court, Leatherback restaurant, swimming pool and bar.
Diving
Dives are done at 2 Mile Reef only. You may dive the other reefs - 5 Mile, 7 Mile and 9 Mile - at a surcharge of R20.00 to R60.00.
Night dives are not part of the diving package.
Equipment is not included, but can be rented from the Scuba Centre. Hiring of a complete equipment set will cost about R200 / day and BCD plus regulator and cylinder about R140 / day.
Health
Sodwana is in a malaria zone. Mosquitoes are prevalent in the summer months and it is recommended that you consult your pharmacist as to whether to take anti-malaria tablets. Mosquito nets are provided in the chalets. We also recommend you bring good quality repellent spray or lotion.
Diver Training
The school at Sodwana Bay Lodge Scuba Centre enjoys an unrivalled position amongst the chalets in the lodge, with the main training area only a few metres from the well-stocked dive shop. A custom built 3m deep dive pool right next to the reed and thatch lecture room, has both a deep and shallow end, as well as a purpose built practice bench to simulate diving backwards from a dive boat.
The school offers various courses and you could be qualified as an Openwater diver in only five days (four nights) or as an Openwater Advanced diver in three days. Also offer Nitrox fills and courses, as well as 8-day Instructor IDC courses. The school's instructors live in the Lodge and will help you in any way they can.
