Tour Description Savute, a remote and wild corner of the Chobe National Park, is situated south of the Chobe River. The landscape with its almost desert-like feeling, is strikingly different from the lush Chobe riverfront. Sizable numbers of elephant bulls are invariably present at Savute and in the wet season, large herds of zebra and tsessebe feed on the Savute plains.
During the rainy season, Savute is home to the annual zebra migration, which peaks in January and February when the zebra and wildebeest congregate in vast numbers to graze on the sweeter grasses brought on by the rains. It is not uncommon to also catch sight of leopard, cheetah and African wild dog.
Savute also supports the greatest concentration of the king of all beasts - the lion. Savute is also a famous battleground for lion and spotted hyena whose ongoing fight for dominance has been captured in the brilliant National Geographic documentary film.
Renowned for its abundant wildlife, the Okavango Delta and the areas surrounding Sandibe are home to a large number of species, including many predators, as well as a number of species adapted to the semi-aquatic lifestyle, such as the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga. Lion prides, cheetah, leopard and African wild dog may be encountered, while families of hippo hide in the deeper channels and lagoons.
The area supports the continent’s largest surviving concentration of elephant and buffalo, while roan and sable antelope roam the open woodlands.
Spend 2 nights each at the Savute Under Canvas Camp and the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge
Itinerary Day 1- 2 You are met at Maun airport and from there, it is a short flight by light aircraft to the Savute airstrip.. A 15-minute drive in an open safari vehicle completes the journey to the Savute Under Canvas camp.
At the camp highly trained guides and trackers will do their utmost to offer you the best possible safari experience. You'll be taken on twice daily game drives. Explore the mopane forests and acacia savanna of Savute on early morning and late afternoon game drives in an open air safari vehicle accompanied by an armed guide. In the wet season, game drives traverse the open plains, where large herds of zebra and tsessebe can be spotted.
Birdwatchers can marvel at the flocks of birds drawn to the pools of water that remain after heavy rains. In the drier season, game viewing is particularly good around watering holes, which attract large numbers of elephant.
Spend nights under canvas close to nature in the wilderness of the African night in the Savute Under Canvas camp. Exclusive campsites in the pristine wilderness form a setting for six ensuite safari tents, combining the natural luxury of the breathtaking setting with comfort and personalised service.
Dine under the stars on a delicious bush meal cooked on the open fire. After dinner, indulge in decadent desserts, served with tea, coffee or cognac. Night time noises filter through canvas walls and well-used animal trails take wildlife past the tents on their way to favourite watering holes.
Day 3- 4 On the 3rd day after a morning game drive and breakfast you are transferred to the airstrip and then flown by light aircraft to your next camp - Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge. The clear waters of the Okavango Delta glimmer through a maze of brilliant green papyrus in front of Sandibe and the game-rich grassy floodplains stretch into the horizon beyond.
The days are designed to thrill you with intimate wildlife encounters and the nights to delight you with the indulgence and romance of Africa. Activities at Sandibe includes twice daily game drives, interpretive bush walks and river cruises.
