Of all the regions in Madagascar, Eastern Madagascar is probably the most popular for first-time visitors. With its spectacular rainforests, beaches and waterways, this former pirate hideout offers a relaxed ambience and more than enough to keep you occupied during your stay.
For the soothing sound of the ocean, sun, sand and fun, Ile Sainte Marie is perfect. This is one of the most well-liked holiday venues of Madagascar, possibly due to its extremely laid-back vibe.
Ile St Marie
The slender 57 km-long granite island of Ile Sainte Marie lies 8km off the coast of eastern Madagascar and is the perfect spot for diving, fishing and beach getaways.
With its almost Caribbean flavour, the island has a completely different atmosphere from Nosy Be, Madagascar’s other popular resort destination to the north-west. Sainte Marie’s old, quaint architecture and its longstanding history as a pirate haunt is fascinating. For the outdoor-lovers, the island is crossed with tracks and palm-lined coves, and offers many opportunities to explore on foot or even on mountain bike.
Of special interest are the Humpback whales that migrate here in August/September and the rare and exquisite orchids at their blooming peak in September.

Vanivola Hotel
Accommodation is at the Vanivola “Hotel de Charme” set on a private beach, with restaurant, bar and swimming pool. Enjoy the local specialities in the elegant restaurant, such as lobster, prawns, tuna, Swordfish and zebu meat. To round off your day, try cocktails, rums and fresh fruit juices in the piano bar and on its terrace with magnificent views of the ocean.

Itinerary
Day 1 - Antananarivo
You will be met on arrival at Ivato airport and transferred to the IC Hotel, where you will be able to relax after your flight and take a swim. Depending on your time of arrival, you may also be able to request, at an additional cost, that the hotel arrange a tour of the handicrafts markets.
Day 2 - St. Marie
After a quick breakfast, you will be transferred back to Ivato airport for your flight to St Marie. On arrival, you will be met at the airport and transferred to Vanivola “Hotel de Charme”. With a private beach & pool, Vanivola offers complete relaxation on this beautiful island. The hotel is able to arrange many excursions for you, including boat tours to different parts of St Marie, road trips, whale tours (in season) and quad bike tours. (Breakfast)
Day 3-5 - St. Marie
Leisure time. Ask the hotel reception about the many excursions available. Scuba diving, snorkelling, and fishing trips can be arranged, or enjoy cocktails on the beach and admire the hues of sunset. The many hotels on the main road offer a variety of meals, and you can stroll into the small town of Ambodifotatra to explore boutiques or the local market (Tues. and Thurs.). All these outings should be in your leisure time and at your own expense.
Day 6 - St. Marie - Antananarivo
After a leisurely breakfast, check out of the Vanivola hotel and transfer to the airport for your departing flight to Antananarivo. Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport and transferred to the IC Hotel, where you will spend the night in an en suite room, away from the noise of the city. (Breakfast)
Day 7 - Antananarivo - Johannesburg
After breakfast at the IC Hotel, we will transfer you back to Antananarivo airport, where you will check in for your flight home. (Breakfast)
